<image:caption>In 2018 Jeff Pearcy realized that changes occurred in the village far faster than he was able to keep up documentation. Dr. Kormoi assisted by identifying three junior high school aged students who are responsible, bright, and eager. (l to r, Kat, Moses, and Maryama). In December, Jeff returned to the village with three cameras that had been donated by himself and Tom Radoszewski. Pearcy relates, “I had only fifteen minutes to train these young people who had never held a camera before. This is the button to turn it on, and this is the button that takes a photo. Get close. Shoot what interests you. Each day they would return the cameras, I would download the photos, pick ones I liked, recharge the cameras. The next morning they would pick them up and I would let them know what I liked and why” Below is the first days of shooting.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dr. Sam and President Bio had a cordial conversation, covering topics about the state of Sierra Leone, what’s next for the country and our operations, and possible avenues for collaboration between PRHeSS and the Bio administration. He was very impressed with our facilities, and liked the goals and vision we have set for the future of our organization. We are happy to see that our already existing partnership with the government of Sierra Leone has strengthened and developed into an executive level partnership.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - PRHeSS Begins Dr. Sam and Mary Kormoi founded PRHeSS in 2007. Their homeland, Sierra Leone, had been decimated by an eleven-year civil war that ended in 2004. The infrastructure of the nation was almost non-existent and the catastrophic effect on its citizens was devastating. Dr. Sam and Mary ardently desired to bring restoration and wholeness to the villages they once called home. Healthcare, agricultural sustainability and sanitation were their top priorities. They worked diligently to build trust and restore hope to the people in Fallay Wujah, Jong Chiefdom.</image:title>
<image:caption>The impetus to build a hospital began with two tragic events that had a profound effect on Sam and Mary. Over a decade ago, a pregnant young woman bled to death on the roadside grass giving birth to twin sons, having no access to medical care. In the summer of 2018, Fatmata Swaray died of condroblastic osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer. Despite efforts to bring her to the US for medical care, she died before she could receive treatment. Her illness would not have been fatal if she lived in a country with competent healthcare. The dream of a local hospital, able to provide medical assistance to anyone in need, was to become a reality.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Projects - Agriculture - Lack of Diversity in Crop Selection</image:title>
<image:caption>Sierra Leone’s most prominent crop grown and ingested is rice. According to the United Nations African Renewal research page, rice currently accounts for 75% of the country’s agricultural GDP. Having a lack of diversity of crop can lead to serious, health, food security, and economic problems.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Projects - Agriculture - Over Reliance of Subsistence Farming</image:title>
<image:caption>The model of subsistence farming, in theory, is great! Families grow enough crops to sustain themselves, at relatively low cost. In reality, subsistence farming rarely works, and is often disrupted by unpredictable weather conditions. When a harvest goes bad, it puts to waste the time and effort that was invested into preparing the crop. That time would have otherwise been used working a job to earn a wage. The ideal solution would be to have farmers increase the amount of crops they plant and harvest per season. The excess crops could both be stockpiled as a food source, and sold at local markets to allow farmers to earn income from their labor. To achieve this, farmers need to start cultivating more land. Simple enough, right? Well… not really. According to the FAO of the United Nations Sierra Leone report, 80% of farmers use less than 10% of the fertile soil in the country. This is partially due to inefficient governance and distribution of land. But the far more immediate and addressable cause for the under-utilization of land is the inaccessibility to farming equipment and resources. With an average 4-6 workers at a Sierra Leonean farm (usually consisting of family members), enhanced resources and technology are needed to achieve growth.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When PRHeSS began its operation in the village, there were no clean water wells. Water was drawn from a polluted river. Water borne illnesses were a leading cause of illness and death in the village. With the generous assistance of Rotary International three wells have been drilled to supply the village. One well is dedicated to the use of the hospital.</image:caption>
